MAHINA ~ THE HAWAIIAN MOON GODDESS
By Calley O’Neill, 1990
Mixed Media: Politec acrylic glaze painting on hand beaten Hawaiian kapa cloth and Gatorfoam; hand-cut, finished and lashed 'Ohi'a frame by Calley O’Neill.

Size: 64”by 48”
The Story: The moon, ever-changing yet eternal, symbolizes life cycles, intuition, and the deep rhythms of existence...The full moon, luminous and bright, serves as a beacon of illumination, transformation, and connection, guiding tides, dreams, and the unseen forces that shape our world.
The Moon has always been a nurturing source of inspiration for artist Calley O’Neill...Her Hawaiian herbal medicine teachers, Po’okela Kahuna La’au Lapa’au Papa Henry Allen Auwae, taught her that Mahealani (the full moon) is the best time to travel and plan celebrations when the sky is at its fullest light.
Revered across cultures, including Hawaiian, Greek, Native American, and Chinese traditions, the moon is seen as feminine, symbolizing intuition, fertility, life cycles, and protection...Despite hearing of the "man in the moon" throughout her life, Calley has always seen an angelic woman’s face in the full moon...This vision was first expressed in her small mixed-media story piece, The Beautiful Chang—O based on a Chinese myth, which became a treasured part of her mother’s collection until her passing...Both Hawaiian and Chinese cultures share a strikingly similar evocative tale.
Hawaiian legend tells of Hina, the master kapa (mulberry bark cloth) beater, who, along with her maidens, created the softest, most beautiful kapa in all of Hawai'i...Every day, she would lovingly prepare food and then beat her kapa....Her husband, however, demanded more and more of her labor until she worked her fingers to the bone...Driven to exhaustion by his unrelenting pressure, Hina sought refuge in the Sun, but its heat was merciless...Finally, on a full moon night, she fervently prayed with such power that her kapa swirled upward into a glowing path, lifting her toward the Moon, from which a special ladder descended for her to climb...As her husband reached out in vain, she ascended, radiant and free, watching over the world with a gentle, loving, and compassionate light.
This painting embodies the moon’s benevolent light...The painting has a prominent place in Calley’s living room and has been described as “the most transcendental piece I’ve ever seen.”

POLIAHU AND THE POINT OF LIGHT
By Calley O’Neill, 2006
Medium: Politec glaze painting on Gatorfoam with a’a niu (coconut cloth) and koa frame crafted by the artist.
/
Dimensions: 46” x 60
This potent and benevolent painting will bring immense vitality, serenity, and beauty to any space as it has for decades in Calley’s living room...This is Calley's quintessential Hawaiian Goddess painting...It is a powerful Feng shui cure that brings contemplation, inner peace, patience, and a heart’s conviction to rise to these qualities.
In ancient Hawaiian mythology, there were four Goddesses who lived and ruled in Hawai'i's snow-covered mountains...They were beautiful, wise, and adventurous....Today, we still marvel at Hawai’i’s peaks as the Goddesses shift from their snowy white kapa capes to the full bloom of lavender sunsets. They are honored as the archrivals of the fire goddess, Pele, and, together, remain the locus of the mythical battle between fire and ice...While Pele sends fiery lava flows to create new land, her rivals provide precious snow melt to help replenish the aquifers for Hawai'i's fertile, volcanic-rich lands...This painting captures her essence of purity and clarity.
Poli'ahu, the best known, means cloaked bosom...She is the legendary Snow Goddess and daughter of Wakea, the sky father, and dwells on the cold, icy summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa...Poliahu also loved the Hāmākua coast, where she came down to interact with the people, meeting the chiefs in games of chance and skill...Sometimes, she wore her pure white cape, relaxing on the cliffs where the waterfalls fell into the sea.
The painting comes with prayers for your inner peace and light.
I invoke Poliahu
from the eastern cliffs of Mauna Kea
to create a new dawn in the center of East and West.
Poliahu, bestow your blessings from this heavenly mountain
to touch every life form and calm every heart and mind
to remember what is truly important
clean water, fresh air, living soil, thriving forests, biodiversity,
and happy, healthy Beings.

LA’AMAOMAO ~ THE WIND GODDESS OF HAWAI’I
By Calley O’Neill, 1990
Medium: Politec acrylic glaze painting on Gatorfoam, hand lashed bamboo frame
/
Dimensions: 62” by 46”
The Story: Hawai‘i is a land of many winds, each with its own name, nature, and spirit....According to Hawaiian mythology, all these winds are held within two sacred calabashes...pu Iki (the small calabash), which cradles the soft, gentle breezes that soothe and caress, and Ipu Nui (the large calabash), which contains the strong, invigorating winds that bring renewal and vitality.
La’amaomao, the Wind Goddess of Hawai‘i, offers both the fresh, benevolent breezes that bring blessings and ease, and the powerful winds that clear the air, making way for new beginnings...She restores the natural rhythm of life, bringing effortless flow, harmony, and breath.
This painting embodies that ease and grace...When we rest in our center, the shifting winds of life cannot carry us off course... By grounding ourselves and deep breathing our way through stress and striving, we align with the natural flow of life, becoming pa ‘a, steadfast, present, and at peace with all that is. Through trusting life’s unfolding, we experience a deep sense of calm and connection.
This work is a prayer and a Feng Shui cure for effortless ease in your body, your life, your ‘ohana, and in the world.
May you and yours be blessed by gentle breezes and the fresh winds of renewal.
May this painting remind you of the peace found in slow, deep breathing.
